Bloomberg's Mark Gurman published a blog post today (November 5th) revealing that Apple plans to launch the M5 Ultra chip in 2026, initially for the new Mac Studio and potentially in future Mac Pro models.
Note: When Apple launched the M4 Max and M3 Ultra chips, it explicitly stated that it would not release an M4 Ultra chip. This is because the Ultra chip's design principle uses "UltraFusion" interconnect technology to fuse two Max chips into one, and the M4 Max chip itself did not integrate the connector necessary for this fusion.
However, the latest news suggests that the M5 Ultra may be making a comeback, and the release timeline is becoming clearer. While Apple has already launched the basic M5 chip in the MacBook Pro, the more powerful M5 Pro and M5 Max chips are expected to arrive in early 2026.
Therefore, the top-of-the-line M5 Ultra chip is expected to be released later, possibly at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June 2026 or at the fall launch event in September of the same year.
Aside from the chip upgrade, there is currently no news about other new features in the new Mac Studio, suggesting that the 2026 update may focus entirely on internal performance improvements. However, there are rumors that Apple is developing two new displays, at least one of which may be released alongside the new Mac Studio.
