Apple has indefinitely postponed the release of the next-generation iPhone Air 2 due to poor sales of the iPhone Air. Three project stakeholders revealed that Apple recently notified engineers and suppliers to remove the model from the development schedule without providing a new timeline. This move has been described by the industry as "extremely rare, even unprecedented."
Originally planned for release next fall alongside the iPhone 18 Pro/Max and iPhone Fold, the iPhone Air 2 aimed for a lighter body, a larger battery, and the first introduction of the VC vapor chamber cooling system from the iPhone 17 Pro. Supply chain rumors also suggested a possible dual-camera design. However, while some engineering teams are still working on related projects, Apple has not yet given a definite release date.
Production line adjustments further confirm the severity of the delay. Reports indicate that Foxconn has dismantled all but one and a half iPhone Air production lines, with production expected to cease entirely by the end of this month; another partner, Luxshare Precision, ended production of the model as early as the end of October. However, Apple has not completely abandoned the project, and internally, there is still hope for a spring 2027 release, at which time the second-generation product may be launched alongside the iPhone 18 series and the more affordable iPhone 18e. If this happens, it will be the final appearance of the model after a major redesign.
