Recently, several tech bloggers spotted multiple batches of Tesla Cybertrucks being shipped to the SpaceX base and xAI headquarters, sparking widespread attention. Tesla Cybertruck Chief Engineer Wes Morrill responded by expressing his excitement about Tesla and SpaceX replacing their fuel-powered logistics vehicles with Cybertrucks, stating that this was one of the engineering dreams.
However, behind this purchase lies the Cybertruck's commercial difficulties. According to Electrek, the Cybertruck is Tesla's first true commercial failure. Originally planned to produce over 250,000 units annually, actual sales have only reached approximately 20,000, resulting in a capacity utilization rate of less than 10%. This low utilization rate has made it difficult for Tesla to recoup its investment and has led to a serious inventory backlog.
To address this situation, Musk has adopted a new strategy: having his companies SpaceX and xAI purchase large quantities of existing Cybertrucks. Over the past week, SpaceX has received hundreds of Cybertrucks for operations at Starbase in Texas; this weekend, several more transport trucks were spotted heading to xAI headquarters.
