Italian startup Captery has unveiled a rechargeable battery that charges in less than three minutes and lasts for decades. The company claims its technology will help reduce the amount of toxic waste that ends up in landfills each year due to discarded batteries.
Rather than relying on traditional chemical processes, the development relies on supercapacitor technology, which physically stores energy, accelerating charging times to 160 seconds and virtually eliminating battery degradation.
The prototype battery boasts 500 times more charge cycles than conventional batteries and uses materials that are 90% more environmentally friendly. The new battery operates at 3.2 V, making it suitable for most household appliances that use two 1.5 V batteries.
It can be charged using the dedicated S-Charge Plus charging station, which is compatible with both AA and AAA batteries. A Captery Bridge accessory is also included, allowing you to combine new and old batteries to extend battery life and balance charge levels.
The standard super kit costs €54 and includes a charger, AA and AAA batteries, and an adapter. Captery plans to release a 1.5V version in the future to make the technology compatible with single-slot devices.
