Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman claims Apple will abandon its lightweight Vision Pro XR headset in favor of developing smart glasses. Citing industry insiders, he explains the reasons for Apple's move and what the future product might look like.
According to insiders, Apple isn't preparing to release a new headset, but rather smart glasses that resemble regular sunglasses rather than AR devices. The upcoming new product is expected to inherit the older VisionOS firmware, but with a significantly simplified feature list.
Gurman explained that the glasses will run the full operating system when connected to a Mac computer and a lightweight mobile firmware version when connected to a smartphone. The device is expected to support an AI assistant, notifications, messaging, and other basic features.
Gurman believes the new Vision Pro will eventually ship and that the company won't abandon the device line, but a price tag of around $3,000 will make it stand out. The smart glasses are expected to be significantly cheaper, though a specific price and release date have yet to be announced.
