The developers of the custom firmware LineageOS have released a new version based on Android 16. It allows users of more than 100 older smartphone models to use modern features and applications even after the end of official support.
LineageOS 23.0 is based on the June stable beta of Android 16, rather than the newer QPR1. This is because the source code for the latter is only available to Google's OEM partners. Even in this form, the firmware offers many innovations, including predictive navigation and support for enhanced safety mode.
The firmware includes an updated Aperture app with Ultra HDR and RAW shooting capabilities, as well as an improved Notification Island with dynamic visual effects and new indicators.
Twelve Media Player now includes a new shuffle button, a new "Now Playing" screen displaying playback statistics, expanded Jellyfin integration, and other features. A new Catapult home screen launcher for TVs has been added, offering quick access and a clear interface without ads or recommendations.

This release also includes updated versions of the SeedVault backup utility and the Etar calendar, along with a new set of ringtones and alarms. Another useful feature is the ability to run LineageOS in a virtual machine via QEMU.
A full list of new features and supported devices can also be found on the project's official website. The development team also announced the end of support for LineageOS 21 and expanded the list of compatible devices for version 22.2, based on Android 15 QPR2.
