Apple recently announced the phasing out of support for the video editing app Clips. The app has been removed from the App Store and will no longer receive future updates. According to Apple's official support page, starting October 10th, new users will be unable to download Clips, but existing users can continue to use it on current and earlier versions of iOS and iPadOS or re-download it through their accounts. Due to the discontinuation of updates, Apple recommends users export Clips videos to their photo library for long-term preservation and editing in other apps.
Clips, launched in 2017, was initially conceived as Apple's competitor to Snapchat and Instagram Stories. Its core function was to stitch together photos and videos and add filters, emojis, and music, but it wasn't a social platform. According to MacRumors, while Apple initially added new features to Clips, recent updates have been limited to bug fixes, and feature iteration has stagnated for years.
The news sparked discussion on platforms like Reddit, with most users expressing no surprise at the end of support. Many users mentioned having briefly tried the app or had never heard of it, reflecting Clips' marginal position within the Apple ecosystem.
