Google has quietly reinstated a useful feature in Android Settings: backup details. Following the August redesign of Android with the more streamlined Material You (Material 3 Expressive) design, detailed backup information has finally returned.
Google has significantly simplified the website in the redesigned interface. Instead of numerous subsections, it now displays just two main sections: "Photos & Videos" and "Other Device Data." The latter contains just two switches: one for enabling device backup and another for using a mobile or metered Wi-Fi connection. Google One storage status information has also been retained, with options for "Clean up storage" and "Get more storage."
Google simplifies the interface, with new backup details that offer a surprise.
Google is now adding a "Backup Details" section to this view, which displays the specific data being backed up in clearly structured containers. This includes:
SMS and MMS messages
Call logs
Device settings
Apps, including app data and the total number of installed apps
Google is responding to user complaints with the new update.
This means that all the information users already knew about in the previous version of the backup feature will be available again. Many people complained about the removal of this overview, as they could no longer understand what data was actually being saved.
Backup details will be restored in Google Play Services 25.38 or later. Users who have updated can find the feature in Settings > Google > Manage backup.
