Google announced an update to its Chrome browser that will eliminate annoying notifications. Notification permissions will be automatically revoked for websites that users haven't visited in a while. A similar principle applies to security checks for camera and location access.
This feature analyzes user activity: if a website regularly sends notifications but receives no responses, Chrome will automatically disable them. This does not affect installed web apps, which will continue to send notifications. If needed, users can manually restore permissions and re-enable notifications through security settings or the website itself.
According to Google, users respond to less than 1% of notifications, meaning most notifications are merely distracting. Testing has shown a significant reduction in unnecessary notifications with minimal impact on overall clickthroughs. Furthermore, sites that don't overuse notifications have even seen increased user engagement.
The new feature will be available on Chrome desktop and Android.
