One of the most recognizable toys of decades past has been given a makeover. The Rubik's WOWCube is a hybrid arcade and Rubik's cube that lets you play mobile games using tilt and rotation controls.
A simplified version of the classic 2x2 Rubik's Cube, the Rubik's WOWCube replaces the colorful stickers with 24 tiny LCD displays. Players can rotate the cube to connect on-screen racing track pieces or control characters from popular game adaptations like "2048," "Cut the Rope," and "Space Invaders." The cube is said to have a battery life of up to five hours.
In addition to rotation, the cube responds to tilting, shaking, and tapping. Through the mobile app, users can connect to the built-in WOWCube Store and download games or utilities, ranging from timers to weather widgets. An SDK is also available for developers to create their own apps.
Despite its many innovations, the WOWCube remains true to its roots and can still be used like a classic Rubik's Cube. If players get confused, there's no need to use tricks or re-apply labels—just press "Reset."
Cubios' development has become an official Rubik's product. Pre-orders are now open for $299. Shipping is expected to begin during the winter holidays.
