OpenAI announced at its DevDay 2025 developer conference that it is giving developers a new way to build apps in ChatGPT. Starting Monday, ChatGPT users will be able to access interactive apps from companies like Booking.com, Expedia, Spotify, Figma, Coursera, Zillow, and Canva. OpenAI will also release a preview of its Apps SDK to make it easier for more developers.
"We hope ChatGPT will be a great way for people to improve, become more efficient, more creative, learn faster, and get better at everything they do in life," said CEO Sam Altman. "'Apps built in ChatGPT' will enable a new generation of interactive, adaptive, and personalized apps that make chatting easier."
The new system is ChatGPT's latest effort to build an app ecosystem. Unlike the previously launched GPT Store, ChatGPT Apps will integrate directly into ChatGPT replies and allow users to access third-party tools in everyday conversations. This provides a better distribution channel for developers' apps.
By entering the names of different apps in ChatGPT, users can draw content from various services. For example, a user can bring up the Figma app by saying, "Figma, turn this sketch into a working diagram." Users can also bring up the Coursera app by asking, "Coursera, can you teach me about machine learning?"
In a demo of the Zillow app, a user can use natural language to prompt ChatGPT to search for apartments in their area within a specific price range. ChatGPT then pops up an interactive map displaying the options, and the user can chat with ChatGPT to learn more about each one.
