the norwegian company opera has officially released a new browser, neon, equipped with ai. however, it is only available to users with a paid subscription.
neon was announced as an "agent browser" in may, but details only recently became clear. neon utilizes multiple ai agents, each with its own functions. for example, "tasks" creates a workspace for specific processes, and "do" handles web browsing within tasks. users can also save instructions to the agents in a card format.
the browser is currently available with a monthly subscription of $19.90, and other users can sign up for the waiting list. opera has not disclosed the number of users using neon.
opera will compete with comet from perplexity and chatgpt agent from openai with this new ai browser. moreover, in september, atlassian acquired the browser company (the developer of dia), and google plans to directly add gemini's features to chrome.
