Apple's new iPhone models, launched on September 10th, are now available globally. While all three iPhone 17 models are now available in China, the new iPhone Air has been delayed. The delay is primarily due to carrier issues.

According to sources, the China version of the iPhone Air is expected to launch in October, but will only be available with a contract and will not be available in a full-network retail version.

The Apple iPhone Air lacks a SIM card slot and must use an eSIM card for communication in all markets. This makes it easier for users to switch carriers and plans. However, this is clearly not something China's three major carriers are willing to do. To prevent number portability, the iPhone Air is available with a contract, binding the phone to a carrier.

This creates significant inconvenience for users, and makes it completely unusable for those with multiple carrier numbers.

The eSIM function is undoubtedly an advanced technology in the industry. The popularization of eSIM mobile phone services in China is only a matter of time. After all, with the support of eSIM, it not only helps mobile phones to be equipped with larger capacity batteries, but also makes it more convenient for consumers to choose operators and packages.
