Huawei is reportedly testing multi-zone, multi-spectral lenses. Is this another new technology leading the industry?

Recently, Digital Chat Station revealed that Huawei is testing a new multi-zone multispectral lens technology that may be incorporated into its next-generation flagship phone, bringing a major upgrade to the imaging system. This technology is expected to significantly improve the phone's color reproduction capabilities in complex lighting conditions, resulting in more accurate and realistic images. According to reports, this solution will not only be used in new Huawei phones, but may also be adopted by other top five domestic smartphone manufacturers in the future, becoming a new trend in the development of imaging technology in the industry.

Multi-zone multispectral lens technology integrates multiple spectral sensing regions on an image sensor. It can simultaneously capture information from visible light and non-visible light bands such as near-infrared and ultraviolet, analyzing and correcting colors based on the reflectivity characteristics of each band. Unlike traditional cameras that rely solely on RGB (RGB) sensing, multispectral lenses can detect richer ambient light information, effectively reducing color casts and enhancing image realism, especially in backlight, shadows, or artificial light conditions. Its operating principle is similar to that of a professional spectrometer, but it has been miniaturized and adapted for mobile phone modules.

The advantage of this technology is that it significantly enhances color accuracy, especially in portrait skin color restoration, natural scenery presentation and low-light shooting. At the same time, multispectral data can also provide more comprehensive input for AI image processing, helping to optimize algorithms such as night scenes and HDR. In addition, this technology also helps to improve environmental perception capabilities and provide more support for AR applications and intelligent recognition. However, its shortcomings cannot be ignored: the hardware cost is high, the module size is large, which may affect the lightweight design of mobile phones; the complexity of data processing increases, and higher requirements are placed on ISP and algorithm optimization.
