Microsoft pushes Windows 11 August cumulative update: adds quick recovery feature, 23H2 version countdown to 3 months of shutdown

Today, Microsoft released mandatory security updates to Windows 11 users during Patch Tuesday. Windows 11 24H2 versions will be upgraded to Build 26100.4946 after installing KB5063878, while 23H2 versions will be updated to Build 226×1.5768 via KB5063875. Enterprise editions and Windows Servers that support hotfixes will need to install KB5064010 and update to Build 26100.4851. This update not only fixes multiple security vulnerabilities but also enables AI features like Recall for non-AI PCs in the European market and adds a centered search box to the Settings app.

Notably, this update introduces the "Quick Machine Recovery" feature. If a device experiences a startup failure, the system automatically connects to the network to retrieve a fix. This feature is enabled by default for home users and can be configured for enterprise users through the Intune management platform. Significant improvements have also been made to the interface: the Start menu now supports administrators pre-configuring pinned app layouts, the Snap split-screen feature now includes new user guides, and File Explorer fixes several issues, including performance degradation caused by SharePoint synchronization.

Microsoft emphasized that no known issues have been found with the current update, but reminded users that Windows 11 23H2 Home and Pro editions will reach end of support on November 11, 2025, at which time affected devices will be forced to upgrade to 24H2. Users still using older versions are advised to check for upgrade options via Settings > Windows Update as soon as possible to ensure continued security maintenance.
