Apple has taken another step forward in improving user satisfaction. In iOS 26.1, Apple introduced a new system that allows third-party apps like Google Photos, OneDrive, and Dropbox to automatically back up photos in the background without having to open the app.
Previously, when an app was minimized or the device was locked, iOS would simply "freeze" all processes. This forced the screen to remain always on, preventing other apps from using it. iOS 26.1 adds a new tool in PhotoKit—Background Resource Upload Extension—that allows the iPhone to independently manage data transfers, even when the device is locked or another app is active.
The system automatically determines when to initiate background downloads, optimizing battery life, network activity, and energy efficiency. Apple's documentation indicates that developers will be able to create and handle download tasks, retry failed attempts, and confirm the success of operations. However, some actions will require user consent to maintain privacy controls.
The iOS 26.1 update also includes other changes, such as adjustments to transparency effects in the interface.
