Scientists and celebrities unite to oppose the creation of superintelligence

Hundreds of prominent figures, including Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, have signed an open letter calling for a ban on the development of artificial intelligence (AI) that surpasses human intelligence.

The document, titled "A Statement on Superintelligence," calls for a halt to the creation of so-called "superintelligence" until scientific consensus on its safety is reached and society agrees.

A survey shows that only 5% of Americans support rapid, unregulated research into advanced AI, while 73% favor strict regulation and 64% believe such systems should not be built until proven safe.

The absence of signatures from Sam Altman (OpenAI), Mustafa Suleyman (Microsoft AI), Dario Amodei (Anthropic), and Elon Musk (xAI) raises questions. Musk and Altman, who previously supported similar petitions, remained silent on this one.
