OpenAI's popular AI video app, Sora, is about to launch a series of updates: video editing tools, the ability to create "cameos" for pets and other objects, and improved social features. OpenAI also announced that an Android version is "coming soon."
Sora head Bill Peebles stated at X that new creation tools will be available within days, allowing users to turn pets, beloved stuffed animals, and nearly any object into cameo characters.
The Cameo feature involves Sora generating personalized AI avatars based on user-provided recorded videos. Once created, these avatars can be shared with friends, allowing them to create videos using your AI avatars.
"We anticipate users will create a large number of new and exciting cameo characters," Peebles wrote on X. "To make it easier to find, we're updating the generation interface to display the latest and most popular cameos in real time."
Sora will also launch basic video editing features, initially supporting splicing multiple clips together, with more tools to follow. The social experience is also being upgraded, with users able to interact with friends at university, work, or sports clubs through dedicated channels.
OpenAI is also working to reduce the issue of over-moderating generated content and improve overall app performance.
Sora is currently available for pre-registration on the Google Play Store, but a release date for the Android version has yet to be announced. Peebles stated it should be available "soon," but declined to provide further details. According to Appfigures, a third-party app store data company, Sora has been downloaded approximately 2 million times in less than a month since its release. This is a remarkable achievement considering the app is still invitation-only and available only in the US and Canada.
